Volunteer Requirements

Volunteer Requirements

If you are interested in volunteering at SCRAP, you must be:

  • At least 18 years old (If you are 12-17 years old, please email us for upcoming Youth Volunteering opportunities). Volunteers between the ages of 12-14 years old will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian while volunteering at SCRAP PDX.
  • Able to do a minimum of six hours per month for a minimum of three months.
  • If physically able, you may be asked to squat, bend, twist, lift, or stand for long periods. If unable to perform physically in a given shift, you must let the volunteer coordinator know at the start of your shift. (If you are not physically able to perform these actions, please note this in your application).
  • Have strong customer service skills and are able to read, write and communicate clearly, since all volunteer positions work directly with the public, staff, and other volunteers. (If you are not able to communicate clearly, please note this in your application).
  • Have regular access to the Internet and an email account.

How to Apply

To become a volunteer, you must first fill out the volunteer application.

Once you have submitted your application, it will then be reviewed by our volunteer coordinator and if accepted, you will be contacted to schedule an interview. We like to get to know applicants and share information to be sure this volunteer opportunity is the right fit for your interests, skills, and availability.

Important Notes

Background Check: A standard national criminal background check is required for some of our volunteer positions. All volunteers must be willing to complete a background check form.

Community Service Hours: This program cannot be used to fulfill court-ordered hours.

Students: It is a challenge for us to accommodate students who are required to fulfill short-term community service hours. We request that, if your service commitment is less than three months in duration, you consider continuing to volunteer at SCRAP to make our standard three-month commitment of 6 hours per month.

Short-Term: We do not accept short-term volunteers. Because we require extensive training, we do not accept short-term volunteers except during our Drop-In Volunteering times and Group Volunteering opportunities. For more information about these options, please contact portlandvolunteer@scrapcreativereuse.org
